Santa Monica Mirror: On Depaving
Santa Monica Mirror: On Depaving
I'm not a "car person" - I admit that I enjoy and rely on their convenience from time to time, but I don't especially enjoy driving and I find an urban environment where it makes sense to walk and use public transport much more "human" and pleasant. This article makes a lot of sense to me, and I wish there were some way to decrease America's dependence on the automobile. My choices about where to live are very very heavily influenced by the pedestrian-friendliness of various locales. I'm not attracted to living in a suburban environment for this exact reason.

It is hard to come to terms with the fact that flying is one of the least environmentally friendly things one can do ... my family is far-flung and I rely on air transport to stay in touch.
I guess I need to start thinking about moving closer to the rest of the clan.

I'm looking for an Exchange alternative for use in the office, and maybe for our clients. So far the front runners include Scalix, Zimbra and Kerio. I may download the Scalix trial and get it going on my "pet" server.
We need to support blackberries which is the big spanner in the works. There's something about Blackberries that I just don't really get - what's the big deal with this "push" email technology? Seems like Blackberry ties you to the Blackberry Enterprise Server, which in turn ties you to Exchange ... what can a Blackberry do that my Treo can't?

Community Virtual Machines
My family's playing around wtih MythTV - my husband's built a kick-ass system on a Gentoo box at home, and now he's built similar machines for my parents and for his mum & stepdad.
My Dad's a world-class geek - really phenomenal - actually, so's my husband, I'm super lucky ... and he's loving his new Myth box and seeing what it can do. One challenge is to allow my mother to stream video from the Myth box given that she's not quite as geeky as the rest of us and is wedded to her Windows laptop.
Dad mentioned he'd done some experimenting with "VMplayer" - I've just looked into it and it looks fantastic. All kinds of possibilities.

My lovely, lovely Firefox browser ...
I love Firefox. Love it love it love it.
I've customized it to bits. I mean, not by programming it or anything that clever but with boatloads of extensions. Here's what I've got installed right now:

Christmas Wish List
Yaktrax pro to strap on my shoes to stop me slipping on the ice.
1GB SD card for my Treo. Or 2GB, even better. I keep checking fatwallet.com for deals.
Hybrid Headphones (stereo headphones + mic with 2.5mm jack), also for Treo
Pocket Tunes Deluxe - allows shoutcast streams to play to Treo (incl. a couple of NPR stations)
Giant bean bag chair/sofa for snuggling with hubby upstairs, during the winter when it's cold downstairs.
Maximum amount of RAM for the 1 slot in my lovely Dell Inspiron 1200 - 256mb just isn't enough for the way I use it ...
Snuggly slippers - with backs! I don't understand why most of the women's and girl's slippers in the shops seem to be "mule" types. I want my feet to be warm all over - not just on the toes.
